Thriving Birthworkers of North Carolina warmly welcomes renowned midwife, author and cultural historian Shafia Monroe as part of her national book tour for Mothering the Mother: African American Postpartum Traditions, Recipes, and Healing. This work highlights the importance of nurturing mothers during the “fourth trimester” through culturally rooted practices—rest, nourishment, herbal care, and community support—that promote healing, improve maternal health outcomes, and strengthen families.

The North Carolina tour events will unite birthworkers, maternal health advocates and community leaders to honor cultural traditions, advance maternal health equity and strengthen the birthwork ecosystem across the state.
